Kind of an abyss right now. PA says it's 60-40 that Cassel starts over Bridgewater.

Not a whole lot going on right now.

I'd guess better than that, but nearly 100% that Bridgewater starts before the second half of the season.

Yeah it sure is going to be hard being patient waiting for Bridgewater to start.

IMO they will start Cassel out the gate and keep him in as long as he doesn't play himself out of a job and as long as they are mathematically still in the hunt. Zimmer seems like an old school guy and they had to basically promise Cassel that type of shot and I think Zimmer will be good to his word. But time will tell.

I really don't understand why Spielman kept him on the roster and didn't find yet another young QB to stick on the roster and develop in that 3rd QB spot.

I understand that Ponder is better than some undrafted rookie but at the same time there is no way you can run Ponder onto the field anymore. Its a waste of a roster spot. If for some reason Cassel and Bridgewater did get hurt, we are sunk anyways (especially since Ponder might be the worst fit of a QB to Norv's offensive system imaginable). Might as well get some young guy some experience.

My only guess is that he is hoping for a large amount of training camp injuries to QB's and hopes to net a late round pick still from a team that is desperate to get a QB onto their roster with a little experience.

Although I am sure the fact that we pay Ponder the same to play for us or if we cut him has a lot to do with it too.

Considering the coaching he received and the guy making the play calls I would have to say that while Ponder will never be a starter in the NFL he could well be a quality back up. Musgrave was just horrible, it's hard to expect anybody to excel following his game plans.

I think the Vikings would have been foolish to just cut him or give him away for nothing, you never know what could happen with a real professional coaching staff around the team. I don't expect anything from him and if he plays it will be under the worst of all possible situations, but still, he's not chopped liver.... yet.

Musgrave took way too much heat here in MN.

In 2012 Musgrave was forced to start Ponder all season in hopes that he would develop and was still able to make the offense an average unit.

In 2013 Musgrave was forced to start a different QB virtually every other week and was still able to make the offense an average unit.

We had one of the worst QB situations the last two years in the league. We had one of the worst defensive units in the league the last two seasons. And yet we were still a league average unit in terms of points scored. Musgrave is far, far, far from perfect but that tells you he was far from awful.
