The thing I think about Ward - and there've been a few good ones before him but I think he was the best - is that he was the best BLOCKING WIDE RECEIVER ever, I think.
I wonder, tho, if that will help him or hurt him, given the the state of today's 'flag football' and 'concussion-preventing' mentality. He was an all-around great football player. Not the same as Tim Brown, by any stretch, but I think they'll both have the same problems getting in. Brown should be in - an absolute gem of a player. So was Hines.
You see, Hines benefited more than Bettis by the day he was born - since Ben came along and made Hines relevant (HOF wise) before it was too late. Otherwise Hines is just the second coming of Louis Lipps (a great player in his own right, in a different style, but who never had a QB/team around him to get his glory).
Bettis would be a shoo-in had he played on... the Cowboys.
Should have mentioned Ward, probably has a better chance than Troy, just thought about the numbers game in what the Admiral alluded to and that he will get lost in the discussion. Maybe near the end of his eligibility or as a senior, not feeling real positive about it.
Troy still gets some decent PR even though his skills have deteriorated fairly significantly the last two years and a couple seasons before that he was injury prone. The first half of his career it was a no brainer but he fell off dramatically due to injuries and now age.
