Jerry Jones has mortgaged the future so bad in recent years, signing the likes of Miles Austin, Doug Free, Brandon Carr and Tony Romo to ridiculously over-sized contracts, that he is now facing a true reckoning.
Jerry may have to cut Demarcus Ware to get under the cap, as well as restructure contracts to Romo and numerous others. Cutting Ware might actually be smart--his play is in steep decline now and he is on the wrong side of 30 and increasingly injury prone.
Problem is, Jerry has zero players waiting in the wings to replace Ware. Nothing. He is ready to replace Austin with Terrance Williams, and somewhat ready to replace Jason Witten in the future with Gavin Escobar. But he has no plan for Ware. And he is pretty much forced to let his best defensive lineman from last year, aging Jason Hatcher, sign elsewhere.
I am sure Jerrah will pull some rabbits out of his hat and prolong the inevitable, but make no mistake, Jerrah has no money with which to improve the Cowboys. His only hope of avoiding a slow slide into last place in the NFC Least is that he nails the draft.
