My grandfather quit smoking by always carrying a pack in his shirt pocket. After dinner etc. he would pull one out and smell it and then put it back. My uncle quit by throwing one cigarette away each pack he bought. First pack had 20, next pack had 19, etc. When he bought a pack and threw the whole thing away he was done. He also smoked less trying to not get to that last pack too and claimed this helped him get to a point where he didn't need it.
