And now Alex Smith is on a new team and showing the exact deficiencies he did with the Niners. Is the ghost of Greg Roman haunting him?Love for Trent Dilfer to show some tape of Alex Smtih doing consistent progressions in this offense to show what Colin is missing. He won't find enough tape to do so. Colin is playing QB just like Smith did except he tries to scramble around for 3rd downs instead of dumping to the checkdown 5 yards short of the marker and punting.
This is a chicken or egg argument. Do the Niners run plays with few read progressions because Kaep hasn't shown an ability to execute them or is Kaep unable to execute them because they don't do them enough?Colin does struggle the few occasions there are multiple reads. Can't get better at what you don't practice or when you are coached to go to 1st read. But to say he's a remedial QB on them when clearly the play above is what is called the majority of the time is ridiculous. The pass offense is what is remedial.
I'm sure that Greg Roman deserves some blame for their passing woes. As does Harbaugh. However you can't just ignore some of the obvious limitations that Kaep has right now as a pocket passer.
FTR, a lot of Hawk fans were harshly criticizing Bevell last year because they wanted him to open up the offense for Wilson. But he clearly knew something about how to develop Wilson and he continued to work in different aspects and by seasons end he had a much better understand of the offense. Honestly, I wonder if the Niners ever really got the chance to do that since Kaep came in mid-season and succeeded largely on pure athleticism.
The good news for the Niners is that the Niners are mostly winning while Kaep goes through this process. Presuming that he eventually picks up the offense that bodes well for the team. But it may take some more time for that to happen.
