Look at a map of the region. from the mess that is Pakistan to the mess that is syria, we have two allies that aren't just out of convenience, Israel and India (and their opposition to Pakistan is a reason. The question mark in Egypt might be balanced by our influence in Lybia and our position in Syria is greatly enhanced by our brokering a new relationship between Turkey and Israel.

Do you think saudi is a real friend, or only an ally of convenience as long as they make oil money and fear Iran.

There isn't a possible shift in the region that can cause us to need Israel less, or more importantly, them to need us.

Every other "ally" could change overnight, as they are all 10% away from flipping from friend to enemy.

Sure, Saudi is an ally of convenience. So is Israel imo. There's nothing the USA would lose or miss if Israel told us to go kick rocks tomorrow. There's a gang of stuff they would miss though and I bet they'd began to miss it almost immediately.
