Tarvaris is a pretty good backup choice. He appears to be an effective leader and teammates respect him a lot. If RW twists an ankle or gets poked in an eye, Tarvaris can come in for a series or two and not be a huge liability. That's about what we need.

Unfortunately in order to clear a spot on the 90 man roster the team has released QB- Jerrod Johnson, :-(
This was disappointing, but being a 4th QB in training camp would have made him the odd man out (much like Portis last year). If Quinn or TJack lose out on the backup job and loser possibly released, I would be surprised to see Johnson back on the practice squad assuming he's still eligible for it.

He's eligible, I agree he could be back on the PS if some other team doesn't scoop him up during camp. He was a pretty intersting developmental project.

Just curious, how often do, "developmental projects" become any good in the NFL?

Romo...Rod Smith...Mike McCrary...Antonio Gates. It happens, but the success rate is pretty darn low.

Development QBs almost never succeed. Nice story but I don't think there was ever much hope of him turning into a legit option.

Not sure what people are expecting out of the QB position but, IMO, Jackson is easily one of the best backup options we could hope for.

Well, we each have our own opinion but when he played for Miami he flashed some impressive talent and has a strong arm and is accurate. He as yet is very raw, still needs to look around more so as to not focus upon one target like TJack, or actually hit the open guy like Quinn.

Developing these guys is good for the team going forward as they can become potential trade chips and allow the team to get stronger. To me he's a good # 3 with potential to be a lot more. Thus he has some value.

Anyways he's not here anymore. So maybe Jackson or Quinn will prove to be more than we've seen from them so far, but I won't hold my breath. Both are probably better than Johnson at present but neither are very good or seem to offer more than being mediocre whereas Johnson still has not had enough reps to have developed bad habits like the other two.

It appears as if the team will go with just two QBs on the 53 and neither Quinn or Jackson is PS eligible.

Not sure if you're talking about college or pro, but Johnson never played for Miami. He went to A&M and went undrafted.

IMO, it's a similar situation to Portis. Great potential tools, but unlikely to ever reach them at this level.

My error about Miami I meant A&M, was zoning out about Tannehill. I still think JJ has potential to be a capable NFL QB, whereas the other two have shown they are adequate but have significant limitations.

The team has had some luck trading TJack for a 7th rd. pick and needs to do like the Patriots and Packers have done and consistently work at developing QB prospects for backup positions or trades. Developing QBs is an easy way to gain value for the team in the draft or by trade.

To me the recent acquisition of TJack has put the likelihood of Quinn making the team lower in terms of probability as Tarvaris would clearly seem to have a leg up in terms of any competition for the backup spot, but with a 1 yr. deal he's hardly valuable as a trade piece and we know the extent of his upside which is pretty mediocre. For me I have little faith that if RW goes down either of Quinn or Jackson offer much in terms of allowing the O to continue to operate at any high level, but they may be barely adequate. I was hoping the team might draft a QB to develop this offseason but there were other priorities and perhaps what was available not that compelling. Johnson to me is a cannon armed athletic raw prospect with some upside thus presents as a developmental prospect which holds interest to me. In the end this FO has been very smart in how they have approached the QB situation and have avoided making serious wrong steps although at times some of their choices have been head scratchers so it's difficult to be critical.

I think we might see Johnson or another back before long as they sift though the DBs, DTs, DEs and WRs and jettison those who have less likelihood to be useful later in the season. I'm not going to say much more on this subject as I have seemingly been on the wrong side of the discussion.

    Something to consider...

I can understand not carrying projects at the QB position (although I tend to agree with you that Johnson does have intriguing upside). I think the team has officially transitioned from "rebuilding" to "win now". Assuming we are only going to carry two QBs, there just isn't room on the roster for a developmental guy. We need the guy who knows the offense the best, and who gives us the best chance to win, under center if Russ goes down for a game or three.

I am mildly surprised that Quinn is hanging out over Johnson...but whatevs. I'd be shocked if he's more than a camp arm at this point.

Despite the company talk from Carroll and company, there have been several reports (Brock Huard, who I respect quite a bit) that Johnson looked absolutely lost and confused out there.

Take that for what it's worth. I can't say whether I agree or not as I haven't seen him play since A&M.

Probably not coming back then. He flashed at times at A&M, but realistically he had little to no shot here. I always find some guy who's a long shot and root for them. Do it every year. Johnson was that guy till he was cut. Guess I'll have to find a new one.
