Detroit has like 30 mil in cap space. I think that includes an amnesty of Charlie V, but even without that its enough to sign Paul.

and Ducky, it'd be a dream come true. I do worry about Paul's long term health though.

Wow. Then I'm gonna say it again.

Considering the future luxury tax issues and the complete destruction of the S&T market, the players would've been better off sitting out the year and agreeing to a reasonable deal.

Hunter deserved to get fired for this.

Actually for the most part you can.

Only teams above the cap apron ($4 million above luxury tax level) can't do a sign and trade.

That means this season only 4 teams would have been unable to do a sign and trade (Miami, Lakers, Heat, and Knicks). Those teams also can't offer the full mid level exceptions too.

So as long as you are under the luxury tax level (even if you are above the salary cap level), you can still S&T.

That's how I understand it at least.

    Maybe I am misreading

    91. Why would teams or players want to do a sign-and-trade?

Teams benefit because they can get something in return for players they would otherwise lose to free agency. For players the benefits are limited. Under previous CBAs a player who qualified could receive a full Bird contract and go to the team of his choice, which encouraged the player to seek a sign-and-trade once he decided to play elsewhere. Under the current CBA a player receives the same contract via sign-and-trade (four years, 4.5% raises) that he could get by signing with his new team directly, and can receive a larger Bird contract only if he stays with his previous team.

They still have a ridiculous deal. They should be happy. Hunter didn't get fired for that either. Guaranteed deals up to 5 years and no hard cap. It doesn't get much better than that.

The deal is crap. There is basically no such thing as free agency at this point

ok dude. Just about any other league would kill for that deal. The problem is, you look at it as getting less money if you leave your team instead of getting more money if you stay. You can choose to take the normal free agency contract if you want. They just aren't going to give you extra money for it.

I disagree. Players shouldnt' be punished for wanting to leave teams nor should any team be artificially given an advantage for the player to stay there.
