There is a small town outside of Peoria, Ill. called Pekin whose high school mascot at one time was the "Chinks." The Pekin Chinks. And back in the 40's, 50's, and 60's they had an asian janitor that would act as their mascot and dance around at their sporting events.
They changed their name in the 1980's to something else, but it's amazing how racially insensitive this nation once was.
i hope they changed the team name to the "ducks" - the Pekin Ducks.
I don't have a signature. You're imagining reading this right now. You should really see a mental health professional about this.
As I said on the Redskins board I have always been on the side that thinks the name should be changed. My argument was very simple: it doesn't matter what we think, if Natives find it offensive then it's offensive.
Well I'm using that same logic to now strongly oppose any name change. SD hit the nail squarely on the head: posters here claim the name is offensive because they feel Natives SHOULD be offended. And of course this poll back this up perfectly. The problem of course is just because some here think it's offensive the fact is the only people who have a say in the matter do not agree. Poll after poll indicates the vast majority of Native Americans are fine with the name, So it's time you old white guys STFU on the subject because your opinion does not matter, it's the Native's call and they simply do not agree with you..
Literally the first link that came up under my search:
In actuallity, less than 18% of Native Americans are offended by Indian Mascots in pro sports. In a March 4, 2002 Sports Illustrated 7 page editorial entitled "The Indian Wars", a poll was conducted amongst Native Americans. Surprisingly, the following information was gathered
"Asked if high school and college teams should stop using Indian nicknames, 81% of Native American respondents said no. As for pro sports, 83% of Native American respondents said teams should not stop using Indian nicknames, mascots, characters and symbols."
Exactly, and the bottom line is that typically the rallying cries for something like that are led by bored white guys or journalists that have simply run out of things to write.... "Let's stir up THAT pot again!!"
As an FSU alum I'm SOOOOO sick of the Seminole mascot being protested... The FLORIDA Seminole tribe endorses the mascot... Don't care what everyone else says, mmmkay?
With "Redskins"? I can certainly see why people could find it racist, BUT... It is my opinion that one should look at intent to find racism, and I don't see millions of people rallying behind a Native American mascot singing "Hail to the Redskins" as racist in intent whatsoever!!!
Native American mascots were chosen by most college and pro teams to honor a particular tribe, or tap into the fierce imagery of a Native American warrior... That's it!!! Spartans, Trojans, Fighting Irish, Minute Men, Patriots, etc... These are images of a group of people FIGHTING for something and sports franchises like to depict that imagery as they try to win in whatever sport it happens to be...
"Hail to the Redskins!
Hail Victory!
Braves on the warpath!
Fight! For Ole D.C.!"
"Fight Fight Fight Fight
For Victory!
The Seminoles of Florida State!!!"
Racism? I think not...
