    Superbowl: On that Safety?

On that safety at the end of the game all the Ravens had to do was have all the offensive players bearhug and hold on to he defenders so that couldn't get through and have the Punter just stand there for the 11 seconds. Since the holding penalties wouldn't have matter all that would have happened was time would have run out and the Ravens wouldn't have had to Kick off.

I think they were trying to do that. I'm surprised there was no call because on the replay you could see it was obviously happening.

    That safety was big.

Odds for 49ers to get a safety was +1350

    $100 wagered wins over $1,350. :)

Your surprised it was no call after the 4th down mugging?

Yeah I didn't even think of that. A lot of very happy betters after that.

As soon as I heard Phil Simms mention it, I knew there were going to be a lot of happy people who dug through the prop bets.

It was the right call though, last thing you want is for Ginn to run it up to the 50 and have 3 seconds on the clock for a hail mary with Moss down there.

The probably didn't bother throwing a flag because the result of the play was a safety either way.

It seems like a flag could have been assessed on ensuing punt, and time added back to the clock from the spot of the foul.

It was the smart call. You take away the possibility of a blocked kick.

I'm not sure, but I don't think they do that on holding in the EZ. The penalty is just the safety. I wonder if they even ever thought of that happening. Now that it almost happened I'm willing to bet they add something to the rulebook about it just in case it happens again.

Also what would have happened if say Akers was lining up to kick a FG and right before he strikes the ball the lights go out and he misses the kick. Is there a retry or is it a missed FG attempt? Really what happens if the power goes out in the middle of any play? If the lights go out when Kaep is releasing the ball and Reed happens to pick it off in the dark and starts running it back with all the lights out? There's hundreds of things that could go wrong if the lights go out during a play. So far the NFL has gotten lucky that it hasn't happened except between plays.

The odds are greatly against it ever happening during a play.

The ball is only actually moving for about 11 minutes during a 3 hour game.

It wouldn't have really made any difference. A hold in the end zone would have resulted in a safety and a punt. Rather than 4 seconds on the clock there would have been zero but that doesn't really matter.

But, Hillary, we've got to look at this thoroughly and assess what happened and make sure this never, ever, never happens again. That's our job but What Difference Does It Make at this point!!

I actually did think about that, that the safety had ramifications for gamblers, though I had no idea what they were....
