    Chinese Hackers 44, Norton Anti-Virus 1

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/01/31/te...nted=3&_r=0&hp

Over the course of three months, attackers installed 45 pieces of custom malware. The Times — which uses antivirus products made by Symantec — found only one instance in which Symantec identified an attacker’s software as malicious and quarantined it, according to Mandiant.
    Interesting story overall.
APF doesn't come in screaming at others about how stupid they are. APF doesn't spam NST with the same tired topic 30 times a month. APF doesn't link to some kook in his mom's basement telling you how to, "Be afraid. Be very afraid" of the world falling down around you. And, when APF is proven wrong, he acknowledges he made a mistake and moves on, rather than harping about "sheeple."

That amounts to a Press Release. Someone other than the Times themselves should report on it. Perhaps a government investigation relating to national security (if they could be trusted not to botch it).

Oh and this is China's authoritarian government acting exactly like a Mob. They were hacking reporters computers to find out who their sources were that lead to the stories about potential internal corruption relating to passing funds to family members. The wanted to "quiet" those sources.

IIRC they mention in the article that they did inform the authorities. And yes, I think the (wider) issue is important enough to excuse the NYT for reporting what happened to themselves... frankly, I think there have been more media that have been targeted, and not reported it at all...

Nothing wrong with the NYT having an exclusive in news about itself. :) Of course, they should cooperate well w/ reporters from other pubs if those folks want to do any kind of followup story.

Yeah I didn't say it was wrong. I just called it a press release. And others should be able to get the story from the Times if the Times wasn't hiding too much with their initial release, I agree.
