Why did you reconsider concealed carry? It’s definitely not for everyone. My reason for doing it is because it’s an added measure of safety I can afford my family with little to no inconvenience. I carry a cell phone, I carry a 45. No big deal.

You are only looking for home defense? You won’t be shooting at the range or competitions or using it for hunting/pest control?

The common answer is a shotgun. I’m personally more comfortable with a handgun. Especially in close quarters like a house. Most people disagree though. I take shotgun over rifle (don’t even own a rifle, semi or bolt or lever or pump) because of their shear all around usefulness. I would look into a 12 gauge pump myself. Mossberg 590 or Remington 870 are the big winners usually. Affordable, low maintenance, and reliable. I would look into safe or some kind of lockable storage to keep it in. You could easily spend more on storage than the gun if you are thinking shotgun.

Yeah, I see the prices on safes and my eyes bug out...yeah, home defense, I haven't been to the range in over ten years now, but I was pretty good with my Paraord 45. In any case, if I got another gun, I would definitely be back at the range to get comfortable with it, etc. And honestly, I want another gun because of my paranoia about IF society breaks down; I'm not talking a dystopic breakdown, but something like the Peru earthquake or Katrina...when law enforcement and the Cavalry are not coming anytime soon.

I decided against conceal and carry because I can be a hothead...and if I am not a part of the solution, I am a part of the problem, right? So the easiest way for me to avoid shooting someone? Don't carry a gun.

A shotgun seems to be your best bet. Personally I would look into an 870. If something should happen, parts availability is better for that firearm than any other shotgun.

Good call on not putting yourself in a bad situation.

You could consider what I have at home.
    S&W 638 J-Frame with an enclosed hammer.

If you have any time at all to get familiar with it, it's exceedingly effective for home defense.

Then put it in a V-Line quickvault

And put a picture over it.
The consistent factor of all of your dissatisfying relationships and failures is you.

This is my thought. Who realistically needs guns that can spray 100 bullets in minutes, really bad hunters?

All guns can fire 100 bullets in minutes.

We aren't currently allowed to own guns that "spray" without additional licensing.

I used to fire a Thomson Contender. That would be something to see

Why would it be something to see? It would take a while, a lot of minutes, but you could do it.

Are you as impressed with my cleverness as I am?

    Yes but, only by half

OK, how about a thousand bullets in seconds?

Is this really a semantic argument? I would like less people to be killed when an incident happens, is that clear?

How many seconds? If I get your point and you are using seconds because it's "less time" than a minute, we are currently not allowed to own those.

The local gun store posted this on FB today:

STATE OF THE INDUSTRY UPDATE! As many of you already know we traveled to Forth Worth earlier this week, we were there for some industry meetings! We also got to sit down with many of the manufactures we sell on daily basis! Ruger, Smith & Wesson, Springfield, Armalite, Remington, Bushmaster, DPMS and Colt are all working at full capacity, around the clock or hope to be in the next month or so. Ruger is making about 3,500 BX-25 mags per day, Magpul has backorders for over a million mags!! We spoke to Sig two weeks ago, they are no longer taking orders on any rifles, they have orders for them that will keep them busy till 2014. What use to be easy to purchase guns are now being allocated along with ammo! All ammo manufactures are producing ammo at full capacity, as civilians we are third in line for that ammo! Because of the run on ammo reloading components are now just as hard to get! It will most likely be 6-9 months before ammo sees a relief! In 40+ years we have never before been sold out of cases of 22LR ammo, we are now. We have some stuff trickle in daily, we never know what may be coming in though! Most of our sales reps know they don't have to call when they get stuff in, just ship it, doesn't matter what it is we will take whatever we can get it in right now! Some suppliers have limited our purchases from them, 5 guns a day is nothing, but that is what we are limited to at some places. The past month has been crazy, we thank you all for your business and for being patient! We will keep you updated!
