    Love them both and it's the inefficiencies created by specialization that spreads like a disease throughout the economy and society. It's divisive and interrupts innovation. You can't have zero specialization (I wish I didn't have to say that, but I know how you like to do the strawman dance), but it drives incomplete models to be used beyond their means of representation, and a dearth of incorporated ideas.

    So we have specialization to gain efficiency (profit), but specialization promotes inefficiency...

    logical.

    Close, CHF. Localized profit, ending up in the hands of the few instead of spread across the many. Yes.

    If I'm running a widget factory locally or internationally, employing efficient widget ninjas who don't know anything about French impressionism is DIFFERENT depending on the scale of my operation?

    Do tell.

    Now you ran away from "profits"? That is how you defined efficiency. That is your definition that I went with and explained to you on your terms. Maybe "localized" threw you? I can't exactly tell, but I did further define it and it looks like you ignored that definition.

    Uhm, huh? Efficiency -------> Profits.

    Means --------> end.

    Efficiency = profits? No.

    Try again?

    Yeah, that's a fine definition. No problems there. I agree with it. I'm just not sure why you ran from it.

    I'm still waiting for you to explain why specialization is bad for efficiency ------> profit.

    Look, I work in a specialized industry. You have to know what I know to go do my job today. There's nothing that says that my company can ONLY hire drones that ONLY know how to punch the specific buttons I punch. But that's a minimum standard.

    I can write scripts, set up camera and microphone gear, do audio sweetening, color correction, produce, direct, even upload and post to the web.

    I will do NONE of those today from 3-11 pm. I will push specific buttons as required by my employer.

    If YOU come in to do my job you will not be able to function, and the other five people on staff will have to take up the slack. Or they'll have to call in another person or have someone stay to work OT.

    Less specialization -------> less profit.

    Explain how hiring me as a specialist makes my company less efficient -------> profitable.

    Oh I see where you went off track. Take a look at it from the macro level, not individual company level. Individual companies try to become more efficient within their space, absorbing efficiencies from other spaces. It's give and take, fluid. There is absolutely an operational necessity for specialization.

    Can you un-jargon this for me? :)

    Not really. Maybe an example could place some context around it. The whole of the knowledge of the Mayan's wasn't as complete as necessary to defeat the Spaniards. Their advanced understanding of astronomy didn't yield a culture that sustained what was to come. Maybe you could think of it in terms of focus. Look really really closely at a spec of sand and you won't notice the beach it is a part of. The entirety of the beach offers more opportunity than each spec of sand. Fortunately we have people, not the masses, but enough, that break the mold and advance our society. What I'm essentially saying is the "machine" could more readily contribute to that advance instead of building walls between disciplines.

    I'll re-read later after I drop some shrooms.

    Pretty clear to sober 'ole me. But I wrote it after running a meeting, advancing a sale, and giving a demo so maybe you should do all that first. Way to be a douche.
