Good article why Smith was fired

I think the local Bears fans would agree with Rozner, I sure do.

Gigantic ego goes hand in hand with being an NFL head coach.

You would expect nothing else.So Lovie Smith was hardly the first arrogant NFL boss who acted like he invented the game, that no player, coach, fan or sports writer could possibly understand his genius.

It's the NFL. Happens all the time. But usually it's with coaches who have won something.

i have to almost completely agree with that...he never wanted a true OC (at a guess because the guy might "challenge" his authority) and his defensive scheme was very beatable.

you put him probably on 27-28 other teams and he would have failed miserably. His defense would never have worked with normal personnel. Actually...he probably would have been the defensive equivilent to Martz...a guy who feels his scheme will work damn the torpedos of what type of talent (or lack therefore) he might have.

Even though I can't stand the guy look at Belicheck...he was able to morph his offense from a run heavy, primary WR set to one that minimizes a #1 WR in favor of 2 TE and a slot WR set. And it works. Everyone always says that college schemes will never work in the NFL...that's true to a point if you try to live with the same style for more than a year. Once teams start getting tape they will find the cracks in the foundation and proceed to bring the house down.

It happened with Rex (stick a guy in his face and he loses all judgement)...it happened once we drafted forte (stack the box and come hell or high water into the backfield and either take out forte or the QB) and it happened with the defense (slants are open all day and if you get the time to make the safeties commit to the outside the middle deep is wide open)

Lovie was here for 9 YEARS and how much variation did we see in his defense...even when Lacher was either playing hurt or more recently lost a step Lovie still would have him stack the middle and try to backpeddle into coverage.

Lovie wasn't a horrible coach...but this is the NFL...Not For Long also applies to schemes. Lovie NEVER learned that.

The thing I hated about Lovie was that he needed owned up to ANYthing.
