    FDR speeches

Today is the anniversary of FDR's most famous speech:

It so happens that earlier this week I looked up what his second- or third-most famous speech:

A complete recording & transcript is at http://www.wyzant.com/Help/History/HPOL/FDR/Fala/ Some of what he said about the Republicans in 1944 remains true today.

And finally, to complete the set, is the even more timely:

APF doesn't come in screaming at others about how stupid they are. APF doesn't spam NST with the same tired topic 30 times a month. APF doesn't link to some kook in his mom's basement telling you how to, "Be afraid. Be very afraid" of the world falling down around you. And, when APF is proven wrong, he acknowledges he made a mistake and moves on, rather than harping about "sheeple."

And in finding those videos, I also ran across the super-timely:

Tough stuff indeed. And almost exactly the same debates we're having now.

He got away with a lot because of his sense of humor, which made me think of JFK.

Of course there was a lighter air to the early 60's than now or in FDR's time. Post war, decent economy, following a successful, if older President.

Companies threatening to close or fire workers if the election doesn't go their way? Eerie.

I was thinking about this when Joe Scarborough made a thing about Obama not shmoozing, or working with Congress.

In times like this, after collapses, their really isn't much comity. You have to fight it out and use leverage when you've got it. Look at the Kennedy clip, could you imagine Obama getting such mush in a press conference today? Not that I'd expect it. These are times where battle lines are drawn. People's interests (business, small business, wage earners etc.)are simply not convergent.
