    OT rule question... onside kicks?

I was watching the Ravens/Chargers game, and joked to my Ravens fan friend "hey, the Ravens should do an onside kick to start the OT. No one would ever suspect it."

Does a team actually have to possess the ball in OT, or just have the opportunity to do so?

For example, suppose the Ravens had used the onside kick to open the OT, and recovered. Then a few plays later they kick the FG. Is the game over?

Or, suppose the Chargers had received the opening kick for the OT, driven into FG range, and then kicked the FG. If they try an onside kick and recover it, is the game over? Or do they just get a second chance to score again???

Each team has to possess it at least once unless the first possession is a touchdown...

Is it possession, or opportunity to possess? I would think that an onside kick is sufficient to cover the "possession" part. But I don't know....

The system guarantees each team a possession or the opportunity to possess, unless the team that receives the opening kickoff scores a touchdown on its initial possession.

» Possession: Actual possession of the ball with complete control. The defense gains possession when it catches, intercepts, or recovers a loose ball.

» Opportunity to possess: The opportunity to possess occurs only during kicking plays. A kickoff is an opportunity to possess for the receiving team. If the kicking team legally recovers the kick, the receiving team is considered to have had its opportunity. A punt or a field goal that crosses the line of scrimmage and is muffed by the receiving team is considered to be an opportunity to possess for the receivers. Normal touching rules by the kicking team apply.

Interesting, you could hypothetically go for an onside kick on the first kick off and if the other team recovers you will still have a shot at the ball, but if you recover you can end the game. I bet we see it happen at some point in our lives.
