Checking down on occasion is not a bad thing, but if you are afraid to challenge defensive backs, that generally means you are going to have limitations as an NFL QB.

I think the Redskins fans could write you a book on Jason Campbell's checkdown addiction and why it limited him from developing into a legitimate pro QB.

Christian Ponder deserves some love in this thread. Campbell is probably the worst though. Brady Quinn is another one; I had big hopes for him.

saw a stat today or yesterday that ponder leads the league in least yards per attempt....5.8 yards, no one else was under 7, I believe.

I can't believe we didn't get to Checkdown Ponder until the second page, he has a lot of Cade McNown to him in terms of his lack of physical arm strength.

His problem these days is he comes up with a premise and then cherry picks stats to back up that claim. See the Steelers defense thread where he hopelessly failed to prove his point because he only uses stats that he dubs important dismissing the reality the Steelers D has been on average the highest rank defense for 10+ years. He even tried to say Brady got more help from HIS piss poor defense the last few years than Ben has.

I do think we have to seperate guys that actually read a defense and throw the ball to a check down and guys who throw the ball short because that is what the play called for.

Ponder falls into the 2nd catagory.

The difference with Ponder is that he doesn't checkdown all that often....the Vikes with him at the helm actually call plays that only call for short passes because of the limitations of his arm and the fact that the OL isn't great on deep dropbacks.

Hell I would love it if Ponder was actually able to check the ball down because that would mean he is looking downfield some of the time and able to read it and progress to a 2nd option. That RARELY happens with him. He either drops back and executes a short pass play or his #1 option gets taken away and he starts to crap his pants.

When I think of checkdowns I think of Palmer because most of the time he is looking down the field at a 1st option that is going deep and then progresses to a checkdown when the coverage doesn't call for a throw. Over the last 5 years I bet the QB that has thrown the most short passes is probably Brady but most of the time he isn't actually executing a check down either....he is going with his first read which was a short pass play.
