I remember the Blizzard of '78.

Also, I started reading this thread thinking it was about hot peppers. A few of my neighbors and I grow and eat exceptionally hot peppers, and I was interested in that. This is not about that.

The Mass Pike became a huge parking lot because cars couldn't move and people had to abandon them.

Sure i'll feel bad i don't have more, but the financial commitment to prepare for doomsday is too high considering depending on the doomsday senario you might be f'd regardless of your prep.
The people that stock up on a ton of food and water are the silliest of the group. Anyone that preps by knowing how to filter water, live off the land, build shelters and defend themselves would have the best chance of surviving.

While I'm not saying it will happen, I think you are greatly underestimating human response to a worldwide financial collapse that would make the Great Depression look like the 90s' tech boom.

Yes it would certainly be very, very bad for society in general if there was a world-wide financial collapse that makes the Great Depression look like the 90's tech boom. You are absolutely correct. I thought 2008-2009 was bad enough. Of course financial end of the world scenarios have been very popular since the Arab sheiks in the Middle Easy started buying up Rockefeller Center in the early 80's. Just the plot lines have changed.

A friend emailed me this the other day, not sure what to make of it really

    My Dear Friends and Family,

I write to share with you some information that I received recently, from a source that in my experience has been infallible.

Beginning around the 20th - 24th of December, 2012, the Earth’s magnetic field will begin to undergo a reversal. This means that the North Pole will become the South Pole and vice versa. This is a natural process that occurs on average every 200,000 to 450,000 years. The time period between reversals varies considerably. The most recent geomagnetic reversal occurred around 780,000 years ago, but there have been periods as long as 50 million years with no reversal, and periods where the reversals have occurred much more frequently. Most scientists seem to think the transition usually takes thousands to tens of thousands of years; however there are some studies that suggest that on occasion it can happen much faster. It is predicted that this reversal will be faster than usual, possibly as short as one year.

By a cosmic coincidence, it is also predicted that the sun’s magnetic field will undergo a reversal at around the same time. This is also a natural process that occurs much more frequently, about every 11 years on average. The strength of the sun’s magnetic field at the poles has been erratic recently and does not fit the scientific models, with the North Pole decreasing in strength to almost nothing, and the South Pole only recently showing signs of the decrease that usually precedes a reversal. However most scientists agree that a reversal is imminent within the next year or so.

The processes that result in these reversals are not well understood. I believe that what may happen is that an intense period of solar activity, such as a solar flare, may propel enough energy towards the Earth to knock our magnetic field out of kilter, resulting in a reversal.

The potential impact on the Earth and on our lives is difficult to predict. A likely effect is that there would be widespread and possibly long-lasting power blackouts. To prepare for this, you are advised to stock up on food, essential medicines, water etc. to last for around a month. And cash – if there’s no power, there’s no ATMs. Over the next year or so until things stabilize, if you use up your supplies, replenish them as soon as possible.

Since I initially received the information, I have heard similar predictions from two independent sources that have no connection with the first. I am aware that there is little scientific evidence to indicate that any of this will occur, and that many will dismiss it as superstition. It may or may not come to pass. However I feel compelled to pass this information on to you so that you can make up your own mind. Take action, pass it on to whoever you wish, or ignore it – it’s your choice.

Finally, stay positive and look after each other. After all, it’s not the end of the world!

One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs." - Kung fu Monkey
