I personally like the format where you have to pick your drivers for the season and the drivers are broken up into categories. That's probably because I've managed to win money in those formats. You're describing what I'm calling a pick'em challenge, I think. Something like Yahoo's fantasy racing?
H2H - just like in football. Draft a team (serpentine style if you wish) - 6-8 owners, 4-5 drivers per team, 3-4 starting drivers per race, head-to-head versus your leaguemates. Each week you get a win-loss record. The playoffs begin at the start of the Chase in an elimination-style format.
