He came out today and told some reporter he spends $400-$600k a year to keep his body in shape to play football. He's out of his F'ing mind spending that much a season. Do you know the workout gym he could have made for say even $2 million dollars? Even for just $500k he could have build an incredible workout area.

I find it's just about pointless to post in the General NFL forum because people are Jealous of the Steelers. No one can just have a regular conversation about football because anytime any word about the Steelers or about a player on the team is brought up people just jump at the chance to insult Ben by bringing up a so called rape he was never convicted for or they just insult you for being a fan of the team. I'll be honest I rarely venture out to the general forum, but from time to time I think maybe things have changed and take another chance at trying to talk football with everyone. I don't know why because things just never change. You'd think people could just get along and talk football, but it's pretty much impossible unless it's in your own teams forum. Next time please remind me to read this post so I don't put myself through it again.

Most interesting(to me) points:

Quote:

 * My initial thoughts with the group players on the field was this: Boy they are small. Now, maybe that’s because I am used to seeing mammoths like LaMarr Woodley and Ziggy Hood, so that’s to be expected. But still, first-round pick Jarvis Jones looked tremendously undersized especially compared to Woodley and Jason Worilds. Now, his speed, that’s just fine. Jones showed that off a couple times in getting around tackle Mike Farrell, but my goodness he needs to put on some girth. That goes for them all — Landry Jones, Markus Wheaton, Curtis McNeal, Reggie Dunn, and so on and so forth.

This doesn't really come as a surprise. Especially with the skill guys.

Quote:

 * Go ahead and keep calling Le’Veon Bell a big back. It just makes you look foolish because Bell isn’t anything near being a big back (when I think of big back I am thinking Jerome Bettis, Michael Turner, Isaac Redman, LaGarrett Blount, Brandon Jacobs, Steven Jackson). Bell is listed at 6-1, 244 but said he is more around 230 but you sure can’t tell that by the way he looks. Bell showed some of his nimble nature that he was known for in college during the first day, but please, please don’t call him a big back. To me, Bell looks like Matt Forte.

He's parroting a national guy who was comparing Bell to Forte a week ago(can't recall who. Daniel Jeremiah maybe?) I will say this....if Bell winds up being Matt Forte it will shut my hole completely about passing on Arthur Brown.

Quote:

 * The one draft pick that looks like he has it all is fifth-rounder Terry Hawthorne, a cornerback out of Illinois. He appears to be an early candidate for sticking to the 53-man roster come September.

Hawthorne was underrated badly by the drat community in general. He played for bad team and then got hurt, but he made plays for a few years when he was healthy.

Quote:

 * Markus Wheaton is a fast version of Antonio Brown.

So...he's Manny Sanders?

If he winds up a faster version of Brown, then he should do juuuust fine.

With the draft over we can now look back at the draft and see who would have been available had we not decided to match New England's contract for Sanders and gotten there 3rd Rd pick #91 in the draft. Obviously you really don't know how things would have worked out because of trades and possibly taking different players because of the extra pick. However if you believe them that they don't draft based on need and draft the highest player on there board then you can pretty much go back and break down what likely would have happened. The way I see it, and probably what would make the most sense, is we would have taken Shamarko Thomas with the 91st pick and not traded our 3rd Rd pick next season for a 4th to select him. We did draft 2 WRs anyway and I doubt we would have drafted any more then that even had we not matched the offer. The way it ended up is it cost us a 3rd round pick next season to rent Sanders for this year.

Thoughts on keeping Sanders now after seeing who we drafted and who we could have drafted had we gotten NEs 3rd Rd pick?

"Maybe they weren't happy with what they had behind Ben and Bruce. That could be. But ultimately, I think this isn't about replacing me. Big picture, maybe they're thinking, 'Can we develop Landry Jones to be the starter? Maybe two years from now, he could be our guy for the next 10 years.' We don't know. But with the contracts for quarterbacks these days, he'd certainly be a heck of a lot cheaper than Ben at age 34 or 35 or 36."

I am hoping they are wanting to sign Ben to an extension. I know it will be expensive but I am just not a big fan of Landry's and am not confident he is the future starter.

Since there has been no posting of a "Grade the Draft" thread I figured I'd get it started. Here are my thoughts after a few days to reflect on the team's choices. Add your opinions and a grade if you feel like it:

1. JJ - obviously Jones was the Steeler's guy from day one. Whether they view Worilds as a starter or not, they had to get more quality depth at OLB after cutting Harrison. I was concerned about his speed and whether that would hamper him in coverage and in getting around the edge in the pros but he is a highly rated and very productive player. Good pick.

2. Bell - this pick definitely threw me at first. I knew they liked the guy but I figured he would still be available later on in the draft and I was focused on adding more to the defense (specifically the CB from BSU or Brown from K State who were both still on the board). Questions about his speed also dogged me. Mostly what I saw were 4.6+ 40 times. Seems like 4.6 RBs equate to average or minimal production in the NFL. His highlights are certainly impressive (though filled with examples of the "Legarette (Blount) Leap" and spin moves. I hope he doesn't get too fancy and overuse them. Great balance, vision and drive though. The RBs did start moving later in the round so maybe it wasn't as much of a reach as it seemed at the time. Getting on board with the pick but still only OK with it.

3. Wheaton - Having watched him at OSU a lot, I love the pick. The guy is a gamer. Very fast and great route runner. Hands are generally good though he will drop passes on occasion. We needed a WR and got one. Will be better than Sanders IMO.

4a. Thomas - Boy we needed this guy. The good safeties were going fast and we were lucky he was still around. Love the speed and hitting. Excellent pick.

4b. L. Jones - Pick came out of left field. Wasn't too enthused about giving the Clowns a third next year but we'll have two. Been saying we needed to draft a decent developmental QB for awhile now but I figured we'd wait awhile since most of the guys I was thinking of were still available. Jones has the tools and was real productive though better last year than this year. Best thing about this pick is that we have totally replaced our backups at QB and won't ever have to see Byron "Windmill" Leftwich and Father time in B&G anymore. OK pick.

5. Hawthorne - Needed depth at Corner. Like the speed we added in the defensive backfield between he and Thomas. Don't know much about him but seems like good value at the position. Good pick.

6a. Brown WR - Ben likes tall WRs, he was productive at OU. Frankly I would be surprised if he sticks but more WRs are a good thing given the age and uncertainty of some of our starters. OK pick.

6b. Williams ILB - long time to wait to fill a position where there is very little depth. Glad they at least addressed it. Sick about Spence's situation. Guy was productive and seems to have been a team leader at FSU. Came off the field during passing downs but nickel and dime packages with extra dbs are pretty standard in the NFL any more so that shouldn't be a problem. As long as he can diagnose and tackle. Good pick but would have liked to have seen ILB addressed earlier.

7. Williams - DT. Developmental project but very athletic and some excellent raw material IMO. I like the pick at this point in the draft.

Overall I'd say it was a good draft. Addressed most areas of need. I think this might be a "defining draft" in the Colbert/Tomlin era. They obviously got the guys they targeted in the first and second rounds. If they pan out and develop into dynamic playmakers and anchors on the offensive and defensive sides of the ball than the FO will have taken a huge step in getting the team back on the winning track. If they don't, there will be serious questions about the talent evaluation capabilities of both Colbert and Tomlin.
