Quarterbacks -- Just another year older.

RB/WR -- In with Reggie Bush and probably another WR.

Assuming Bush to be the new starter, with LeShoure as the change up. Hope Bell makes it, I liked him last year. Think he still has a place.

Also assuming #2 WR isn't currently on the roster. Don't think Nate or Broyles is ready week 1, hope they prove me wrong. TE should be relatively stable.

OL -- 3 new starters. Reiff, Warford and either Fox or Hilliard. That does NOT bode well for the early games, although I think they'll be OK once they work together a while.

Prognosis -- 5 of 11 new starters. 3 new to the team.

DEFENSE

DL -- 2 new starters. Probably Jones and either Willie Young or Ziggy. Rooting for Ziggy -- if the Lions are to do much of anything this year I think he's gotta be an impact player. Don't think he will be in 2013 and that does not bode well for the Lions.

LB -- 1 new starter. Maybe Tahir Whitehead. Please bear in mind that 4th round pick COULD HAVE BEEN either Okafor from Texas, Schwenke from Cal or Barrett Jones from Alabama. OUCH.

DB -- 2 new starters. Corner -- either Bentley or Slay, and Glover Quinn at SS.

Prognosis -- 5 of 11 new starters. 3 new to the team.

SPECIAL TEAMS

All new. Improved kickoffs for sure if the punter is as advertised. Better punting (that's almost a given, given last years horrible performance) and Better return game (that's almost a given, given last years horrible performance).

Overall improvement -- but I don't see much over 6-10 or 7-9.

 Strengths
•Surprisingly agile in short area as a pass protector
•Stout build (6-foot-3, 332 pounds) with very wide shoulders and enough reach (33 3/8-inch arms) to take on more than one defender, if needed
•Competitive - plays with hustle to the whistle
•Powerful initial punch
•Well-rounded blocker - adept at pass protection and in the running game
•Sound technique
•Experience - 47 games played
•Awareness - sees blitzes and understands defensive schemes

Weaknesses
•Slow out of his stance
•Scheme limited - might be seen as a viable starter in power-blocking systems only
•Doesn't always fire out low enough to be dominant in short-yardage situations
•Occasionally dips his head and becomes open to swim moves

http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/p.../larry-warford

Quote:

STRENGTHS: Possesses a short, squatty frame with broad shoulders, making him difficult for defensive tackles to slip past when he's in pass protection. Surprising balance and lateral agility in pass protection, showing the ability to slide in either direction. Strong hands which he uses to grab hold of the chest plate of the defender and pull him in close, negating any quickness or arm-length advantage the defender might have. Shows good awareness to handle surprise blitzes and the competitiveness to finish off defenders he sees off-balance. At least adequate initial quickness when getting out to pull. Uses his girth and impressive initial explosive pop to knock defenders off the ball.

WEAKNESSES: Carries too much weight around his middle. Slow, even for a man of his size. Lacks the straight-line speed to consistently get to the second level in time to make blocks on the move. Drops his head at times, making him vulnerable to swim moves by quicker defensive tackles.

COMPARES TO: Uche Nwaneri, OG, Jacksonville Jaguars -- With a similar body-type, mauling style and level of durability, Warford could join Nwaneri as a dependable starter in the NFL.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profil...ord?id=2539248

Quote:

 Strengths
Big-bodied guard prospect with lower-body girth. Quick feet for his size, keeps them moving in pass protection to mirror his man and can adjust quickly to ride defenders penetrating gaps out of the play. Also plays with knee bend and has arm length to maintain distance from his man, will reset and punch with one or two hands throughout the play. Capable of getting off tackle block to pick up delayed blitzer. Flashes quickness to trap and get around the tackle to lead run plays. Gets down quickly to cut block and take out linebackers in the hole on traps. Hustles downfield to help out ballcarriers when needed. Plays with some attitude, brings some pop to his punch when helping his tackle against a pass rusher.

Weaknesses
As one might imagine for someone of his size, Warford is not tremendously explosive out of his stance. He also struggles to react quickly enough to defenders who are simply diving at his legs. For this reason, running directly behind him on short yardage situations is not as successful as one might expect given his size. It's also possible that quicker defensive lineman in the NFL with active hands could give him problems due to this deficiency.

NFL Comparison
Marshal Yanda

Bottom Line
Warford translated his power as a drive-blocker, unexpected foot quickness and downfield hustle into a fantastic, decorated college career –- and should win his share of battles against NFL linemen when able to get his thick body moving quickly off the snap. That size, strength, and those surprising nimble feet should help him nab a draft slot in the top half of the draft and step into a starting lineup at the next level immediately.

STRENGTHS: Possesses an athletic build with long arms. Good quickness, fluidity and straight-line speed. Better than expected route-recognition given his lack of experience and has natural coverage ability. Reads the quarterback's eyes and shows a burst to close on the ball. Times his leap nicely to compete for 50-50 balls, showing good hand-eye coordination to at least disrupt the pass. Experience as a kick returner is evident in his open field running ability. Has good vision and the patience to allow blocks to set up as well as enough athleticism to make opponents miss in the open field.

WEAKNESSES: Only has one year of starting experience at the BCS level and had plenty of opportunities to make plays starting opposite Banks, an established star. Is better in coverage than he is as a run defender. Struggles to get off of blocks and shows less than ideal aggression as a tackler, overall. Has a tendency to duck his head and swipe at ball-carriers' legs, resulting in missed tackles.

COMPARES TO: Tracy Porter, CB, Denver Broncos -- Don't judge Slay on his surname as he is far from a physical striker but the coverage skills are in place to warrant a middle round selection. With greater willingness to get his jersey dirty, Slay could develop into a starter.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profil...lay?id=2540288

 Strengths
Slay has a good build for the position and long arms. Gets good use out his length and will use his hands to disturb receivers during the route. Very good at attacking the hands and arms as the receiver goes for the reception, forces a lot of drops. Works across the face of his blockers, and creates separation with his length. Physical tackler. Solid hands. Talented special teams player and a hard worker.

Weaknesses
On the slimmer side and could stand to add strength. Stays too upright in his backpedal. Doesn't have the quickest feet, faster receivers could give him issues. Struggles with putting his foot in the ground and driving on the ball. Lacks great change of direction skills. Can get locked on blocks when trying to attack downhill. Not an impressive blitzer.

NFL Comparison
Antoine Cason

Bottom Line
Slay is an aggressive corner with good length. He is skilled in playing the hands of the receiver and forces incompletions because of it. Slay's toughness translates when it comes to his run defense and special teams play.
Receiver was kind of ignored. I thought they might take Hunter but Tenn took him 2 picks before the Lions got Slay. Also was hoping they'd get Denard Robinson but he went 2 picks before them to Jax in the 5th.

NO OLBS. I found that to be a little strange. They need to plug in Justin Durant's replacement. Perhaps it will be Tahir Whitehead -- the reason they didn't have a 4th round pick this year. Or maybe Travis Lewis.

Hoping that Riddick can take over the return duties. I don't think I can stomach another year of Stefan Logan.

Overall I give it a B.

STRENGTHS: Rare combination of size, athleticism and natural power. Has a long, well-distributed frame with room for additional muscle mass without a significant loss of quickness. Flashes an explosive initial punch to the offensive lineman to gain space.

Possesses rare balance that allows him to maintain his feet despite taking long-strides that gobble up space between he and the quarterback with surprising speed. Balance and surprising lateral agility is also evident in changing directions. Has good -- not great -- strength but very good natural explosiveness to bull rush his opponent into the pocket.

Slips off blocks when the ball-carrier is near, latching on with his long arms and big hands for the drag-down tackle. Seemed to improve nearly game to game in 2012, especially when it came to locating the football. Began to sniff out screens and draws as the season wore on, demonstrating good awareness and hustle to complement his physical traits. Already shows excellent recognition and use of hands in pass defense, getting his hands up to knock down nine passes in 2012.

Possesses significant untapped potential and is an ascending talent whose best football is ahead of him.

WEAKNESSES: Lacks elite first-step quickness off the snap. Relies too much on his speed, size and an explosive first punch to shock his opponent with his initial surge, struggling to break free if the blocker grabs a hold of Ansah's jersey or chest plate.

Must learn to chop with his hands most consistently and powerfully to break free once engaged. Allows his pad level to rise and can be pushed back in the running game. Has only played football since 2010 and has just one season as a starter.

COMPARES TO: Jason Pierre-Paul, DE, New York Giants -- Ansah is not the same terror-off-the-edge pass-rusher that Pierre-Paul was coming out of South Florida, but he's similarly gifted and plays with greater commitment to the run. Like there was with Pierre-Paul, there is some risk factor with Ansah, but his upside is through the roof.

http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profil...sah?id=2539931

Quote:

 Strengths
Combination of size, length, and foot speed is nearly unparalleled. Delivers solid first contact that jolts opponent back. Continues to press and locate ball carriers in the backfield. Consistently sheds at the line of scrimmage, envelopes his target with a strong grasp and outstanding closing burst. Flashes the complete package, specifically when rushing from the edge. When lining up inside a natural anchor shows up, helped by low pad level off the snap. Burst off of extension is counter move, gains significant ground on target. Obvious coaching on technique is absorbed and implemented.
Weaknesses
Has admitted to a lack of stamina. Fatigue is noticeable after a few plays of rushing the passer. In those circumstances, does not chase the play down from the backside, instead staying at the line of scrimmage to knock down the pass. Technique is not always there, specifically on the edge against the run. Frequently gives up the wrong arm or shoulder to blockers, takes himself out of the play. Hand fights at the line against the run rather than driving or penetrating to disrupt. A hit-or-miss player on the field but consistency is growing.
NFL Comparison
Justin Tuck
Bottom Line
It's amazing how far Ansah's technique has come in such a short amount of time, not to mention how much he has transformed his body to fit the role coaches want him to play. Sizable frame coupled with outstanding closing speed and natural power. Ansah is rough around the edges, but height/weight/speed with positional versatility makes for a tantalizing upside.

 Strengths
•Excellent size (6-foot-5, 271 pounds) and speed (4.63-second 40 time) combination
•Huge wingspan (35 1/8-inch arms) and hands (10 1/4 inches)
•Just scratching the surface of his potential
•Impressive balance, lateral agility and body control
•Clogs passing lanes - shows awareness when taken out of the pass rush
•Versatile - played rush linebacker, defensive end and D tackle at BYU
•Strong tackler - wraps up well and drives players to the ground
•Has flashed combo moves as a pass rusher - untapped potential to improve his technique

Weaknesses
•Extremely raw and inexperienced - started playing in 2010 and has one season as a starter
•Needs to improve his technique and hands to disengage
•Lacks stamina
•Can take himself out of plays by being too aggressive
•Inconsistent run defender
•Questionable dedication to the game - his heart is in basketball

Three WR's who all look about the same. Not sure any of the three is the deep threat they want though.

A couple more DE's I like, but not sure we can afford to double up on DE.

Not sure Te'o could play outside LB for us but just from a leadership standpoint, you have to consider him.

Margus Hunt was one of my favorites coming into the draft, but like I said, not sure DE is feasible. Menalik Watson makes the most sense, but he might be the only possible LT left in this draft, so somebody could easily trade up IMO. The Lions brought in Robert Woods for a visit I know, I think Hunter from Tenn too. maybe even Keenann Allen, i know they brought in several guys. You have to think that is because they have been thinking about taking a WR here for a while. One of them will certainly still be there.
