I need to get some ideas for funny practical jokes to play on someone at work. They have to be funny but not enought to get me canned. Can you help me out?

Here is one we did to a friend in college.
Get a Halloween "Jason" hockey mask. Cut our the letters "YOU" and paste them to the mask. Get a knife, cut a little slit in the mask and stick the knife in the mask. Then get a little red paint and put little droplets of blood on the mask.
Send this in a box to this friend at work.
My friend at school (a female who lived down the hall from me) screamed like crazy when she got it. We all laughed.
You could always use variations but that is what we used and it worked well.

"Go into MS Word or similar program on co-worker's computer, and add an entry to the AutoCorrect feature. This is a very simple prank that will send the novice user into a frenzy. Configure the AutoCorrect option to replace the word "the" with the phrase "you suck!". They will usually panick and start scanning for viruses."
I like that one.

some great ideas here. I like
Do a "Print Screen" of the user's desktop, and then paste the image from the clipboard to a photo program, and save the image as a bitmap. Then, set the 'snapshot' of their desktop as the actual desktop wallpaper. (You'll have to hide the Windows status bar, and move all their desktop icons into a folder, which you can hide conspicuously in the corner or something.) The user will see their desktop as always, but everything on it will appear to be frozen when they try to click on it...sending them into a rebooting and virus scanning fit!
Instead of taping the mouse, take the ball out. I have done this and most of the time the people go to reboot the computer.
At another job this one guy used to go to pinch a loaf at the same time everyday (4:30 near the end of the day) I would wait a few minutes and then go in to the bathroom. This bathroom had no windows. I would go to the sink and wet some papertowels. then go to the door open it a couple of inches for little light then flick the light off and start throwing the paper towels over the stall door to him. There were times when I was out of the office doing an audit when I would come back just to do that and then go out the back door before he could come out. Which is why it took him so long to blame me. Good times.

I especially like that one because it is so sneaky and there should be no way to get caught.

I prefer to replace the mouse ball with a large peanut M&M. Then the mouse works sporadically, usually making the person slam the thing up and down and curse up a storm before requesting assistance.
Confused: good. Confused and pissed: better.

I dunno why, but that's the hardest I've laughed all week.

Another one you can do to someone who has a MS Word document up on their screen unattended is to select the text and go to Format-Font-Text Effects and select "shimmer." (not recommended if your target has vertigo)
If you have black phones at work, put eye black on the person's ear piece.

If your office uses the mouse with no ball, scotch tape over the lazer eye does the same thing as removing the ball. It can be hard to detect as well.

If you have a normal bathroom with a normal door and knob like in a house, you can penny someone in. When they take the stool, very quietly push the top of the door hard and jam several pennies just above the knob. Then push real hard on the bottom of the door and jam several pennies just below the knob. All pennies are placed between the door and the frame for the door just above and below the knob which applies a lot of pressure on the mechanism. You can do this with hardly making any noise. At most there will be a creak or two and the person will say "wait a minute" or "hold on". It only takes about 30 seconds to complete. The door knob is then jammed so tight they will never be able to twist it. They will have to beg passers by to let them out. This works well with someone unpopular as everyone will just bust their chops and not help then until they panic. Someone on the outside will have to pry out the pennies with a screwdriver.

One time, I wrote up an April Fools progress report for my supervisor. I gave him these weekly. I wrote one which started out normally, but digressed slowly into the totally outragous. On the very bottom, I wrote April Fools! It worked better than I could have planned. He got about halfway through reading it, and called me into his office and started harshly questioning me. I had to interrupt him and ask him to read the bottom. I walked by his office an hour later, and his face was still beet red. :)
Someone in our office liked to tape memos/notes on his walls, almost obsessively. So, one day when he came to work, his co-workers had taken everything on his desk (except computer monitor) and taped it to the walls. The stapler and the phone were the funniest.
One computer-related trick you could try is this: Make a bitmap image of a person's desktop. Then, remove all the icons from their desktop, make that screen image the Background, and drag the task bar down to make it invisible. The images of his old icons and his taskbar will be on the background, and look exactly like desktop did. However, nothing will happen when he clicks on anything. If you set it up right, even if he powers off the computer and starts it back up again, it will come back up exactly the same way and he still won't be able to do anything. :D

Here's one for you "shop" guys.
Take a tube of "Prussian Blue" and put a tiny dab on something that they will touch with their hands. Sit back and watch them turn everything blue.
